If you're considering running for office in 2024, the indispensable Running for Office Guide, provided by the WV Secretary of State, answers every question about filing to run, setting up a campaign committee, raising money and much more. Rather than wondering what's involved in becoming a candidate, and how complicated it is--not very, although there is a strict timetable for filing and reporting--download the Guide and find out.
The following local offices are on the ballot in 2024:
County Commissioner for the Southern District
County Sheriff
County Tax Assessor
County Prosecutor
School Board (Northern & Central Districts)
Requirements for each office:
COUNTY COMMISSION
Term: 6 years Minimum Age: 18 years
Residence: Resident of open magisterial district--Southern in 2024
COUNTY PROSECUTING ATTORNEY
Term: 4 years Minimum Age: 18 years
Residence: Resident of West Virginia
Other: Admitted to practice law by the time the term begins
COUNTY SHERIFF
Term: 4 years Minimum Age: 18 years
Residence: Must reside in the county in which they are elected
A sheriff may only serve part or all of 2 consecutive terms.
COUNTY TAX ASSESSOR
Term: 4 years Minimum Age: 18 years
Residence: Must reside in the county in which they are elected
BOARD OF EDUCATION
Term: 4 years Minimum Age: 18 years
Filing Fee: $25
Residence: Resident of open magisterial district--Northern and Central in 2024
Other: High School diploma or GED; Training required prior to taking office
Candidates must file a Certificate of Announcement and pay the filing fee, which is one percent of the annual salary, with Missy Bennett, County Clerk between Monday, January 8 and Saturday, January 27. For information about the filing fees, call Missy at 304-799-4549.
